About the gallery

Bim Bam Byron Bay was established by Barbara Newland, MBA (Bond) AFAIM, LGM, in November, 2005. It is located at Byron Bay, a beautiful seaside community on the Far North Coast of New South.

Barbara’s love of indigenous art and craft developed and blossomed during the years she spent working in remote communities in the Northern Territory. A Management Accountant by profession, she has a continuing association with the NT through her work with the Local Government Association of the NT. She is currently the Management accountant for the Tiwi Islands Local Government.

“Bim Bam” is derived from the Kunwinkju term “Bim Bom” which translated means painting rock art. The Mimi Spirits used in the logo were designed by Neville Namarnyilk, a Kunwinkju man living in Kakadu National Park. Neville, accompanied by his family, was the guest-of-honour at the official opening of the Gallery. Barbara has a particular affection for the indigenous people of West Arnhem Land as a result of the time she spent as the Director of Corporate Services for Jabiru Town Council. During her time there she played a pivotal role in the development of indigenous enterprises, youth initiatives and endangered languages projects. She sees the establishment of the Gallery as a continuation and natural progression of this work.

In every aspect of the gallery’s operations Barbara is committed to maintaining only the highest of ethical standards. All works are sourced either directly from the representative arts and crafts co-operatives owned by the artists or from reputable art galleries with substantial track records and industry experience. Barbara is also fostering artists in West Arnhem Land, such as Neville, to become independent entrepreneurs in their own right.

The work presented by Bim Bam Byron Bay is extensive and wide-ranging including paintings, fibre-works, pottery, carvings, memorial poles and literature. The range will continue to evolve in harmony with the evolution of the artists’ endeavours. Please enjoy your visit.
